For great, successful and long-lasting results, It doesn’t matter how good your training plan is if you cannot stick to it.

What makes adherence possible?

Strength training is a journey which must be continued for a long time to see meaningful results. I want to remind you of something more fundamental to your success. 
 
“it doesn’t matter how good your programming is if you cannot stick to it.”
 
What may be technically more optimal on paper is entirely irrelevant if you don’t do it. Work on making the best training plan that you can within the confines of what you can adhere to. Produce a training plan that you can maintain consistently over time.

The important conditions for training adherence.
Training needs to be:

  1. Realistic

  2. Enjoyable

  3. Flexible

These are common to a lot of things, not just specific to strength training. Now, there are people that are convinced they have an iron will and can handle anything, right? You might be one of those people. However, this type of thinking misses the point. When you set up a training program there is nothing impressive about choosing something that cannot be sustained.

Me – “how many times a week can you work out?”
Client – “5 days a week, I got this!”
Me – “Really? You have a busy job, family, a big social life, plus you like to party now and then. You don’t have to train 5 days a week. Thinking this will get you great results and fast!”
Client – “OH, really? Well, realistically I can get to the gym three times a week and see you twice for our 1-2-1 sessions.”

We all want fast progress, but until you commit to the long haul you will never realise your full potential. Understanding this truth will help you make far fewer mistakes in the long run and reach your goals much more efficiently. It just requires self-restraint and self-awareness. There are situations where will and determination alone simply will not cut it, or if a situation does require it, we need to understand how that impacts other aspects of our lives and training. This is something we need to continually bear in mind.
