Adequate protein intake throughout the day
Another 6 Steps to the Perfect Diet! (Start with the list above first) if you have, awesome! Now you can step in up a notch.
Be more aware of your caloric intake, use something like Myfitnesspal to start off with and track what you normally eat for a week.
Find someone who can help you calculate your calorie and macros for a truly bespoke view of what your current consumption should be according to your lifestyle, exercise habits, and body composition.
Focus on calorie consumption and protein intake to begin improving your nutritional approach (don't start hacking your favorite foods or carbs, just adapt slightly).
Increase your daily intake of vegetables per day.
Get a broad range of dietary fats from sources such as avocados, nuts, seeds, oils and a quality source of omega 3 (easy for fish eaters- salmon).
Keep carbs in your daily intake, over the period of a year of being mindful of nutritional intake, it really doesn't matter in the long run where you pull calories from. If your goal is fat loss this may not be the case for people training for performance e.g. gym-goers looking to enhance body composition.
Bonus...
Make sure what you do is SUSTAINABLE!!! Create mindful practices around the nutritional intake. But don't get married to a particular system of eating.
